China, ROK Release over 2 Million Fish Fry

The 4th China-ROK Joint Fish-release was held simultaneously in Yantai, China and and Mokpo, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea on July 29, 2022. Vice Minister Ma Youxiang and Vice Minister Song Sang-Keun of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of ROK attended the event and delivered remarks.       

 

The event is part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-ROK diplomatic relations. It aimed to intensify practical cooperation in the fisheries and restore aquatic biological resources in the Yellow Sea.    

 

Over 2 million fry of various aquatic species, such as back rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, small yellow croakers (Larimichthys polyactis), gazami crabs, and greenfin horse-faced filefish, were released into the Yellow Sea by China and ROK.

Vice Minister Ma highlighted the significance of fish release and restocking in the Yellow Sea for the conservation of marine ecosystems, increase of marine productivity, and increase of fishermen’s income. Since 2018, China and ROK have jointly conducted fish restocking events three times, which demonstrates the importance attached by China and ROK to the conservation of marine fishery resources and high-level cooperation in fisheries.   

 

The Chinese Government puts great emphasis on marine ecological conservation, adopting a multi-pronged approaches to the rehabilitation of marine fishery resources, including fishing moratoriums, restocking fish fry, marine ranching, and fishery law enforcement and supervision.  

 

Vice Minister Ma put forth the following proposals regarding bilateral fishery cooperation: 1) strengthen communication and consultation by giving full play to existing bilateral mechanisms and frameworks; 2) intensify joint law enforcement to maintain order in fishing operation activities; and 3) strengthen resource conservation of the Yellow Sea by the release of aquatic species fry and marine resource surveys and assessments in particular waters.     

 

Shandong Province Vice Governor Jiang Cheng attended the event. Also attending the event in Yantai were representatives from China’s Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the Chinese Coast Guard, and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in China. Among the event participants in Mokpo were representatives from MOF and the Chinese Consulate General in Gwangju, ROK.
